For those of you who have a large video collections on your computer I thought I’d post some pretty good products that have recently come out or are coming out shortly.
4 or 5 of my co-workers own a Western Digital HDTV Media Player.
Basically you put all your video’s on an external USB hard drive and plug it into this media player and you have a pretty sweet front end to play all your movies on your TV. This media player is also upgradable, so it can handle pretty much all the media codec’s (formats) that are out there today and hopefully in the future as well. Of all my co-workers there hasn’t been any complaints with this unit. At $100 USD (on sale) you can hardly go wrong. The one thing that you do have to watch out for is that some movies are encoded (created) with audio formats that this player cannot decode. What this means is that you have to hook up a toslink cable from the media player to a Stereo Receiver that has the ability to decode the audio. Mind you, if your trying to supe up your TV setup, you will need a surround sound receiver. So if you don’t have a stereo receiver than you may need to go out and get one.
For some more advanced features the Popcorn Hour C200 is soon to be released. This is something that I may be looking into personally… My wife, Angela permitting. This unit appears to have everything. You can hook up a Blu-ray drive to it, it hooks up to your home network/internet so you can have so many additional features. Ladies (Those of you who read from Oh She Glows) if you have a boyfriend/husband who is a bit of a tech geek who watches movies on their computer he will LOVE this!
Mind you that everything comes at a price. The unit is said to retail around $300 USD, and if you want to maximize the capability of this unit you will probably want to put a large HDD in it which will cost $80 USD and a Blu-ray Reader which will cost around $100 USD.
There are so many of these HD media players out there these days, sooner or later I’m sure most people will have them in the home. If you use any of these media players, I’d be interested in your own reviews.
